PwnageTool is a method that has been around for quite some time. You can use it to both jailbreak and unlock your iPhone. This method has been developed and released by the iPhone Dev Team. Over time the Dev Team has updated the software in response to Apple disabling some of the methods that they use as well as to fix bugs and to provide improved services such as untethered solutions.
There are Mac and Windows versions available of Pwnage Tool. To begin you have to download and install the software and sync your iPhone. It is recommended to use Expert mode when you use Pwnage Tool to jailbreak your iPhone. You also have to use a custom iPSW firmware version that you can download from online. Sometimes you find that it is easier to allow iTunes to download this firmware but if you choose this route be sure to not let iTunes install it.
Once you have the firmware version you need you can make some manual changes but it is recommended to leave everything pretty much alone. What you want to be sure to install is Cydia Installer, OpenSSH and Cydia’s Source Set. After these have downloaded you can install the unlock software.
PwnageTool is compatible with a Windows or Mac computer allowing you to jailbreak your iPhone. You will also need Option-Restore or Shift-Restore software that you will use when you connect to iTunes. This jailbreak does not preserve the baseband nor will it unlock your device.
You can download PwnageTool from the iPhone Dev Teams site for free. Be sure to also download the IPSW stock version 4.3.2 of the operating system. Also have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer.
Then you will need to place the iPhone in DFU mode, close out of the PwnageTool app, start up iTunes again and follow the prompts. After a few moments you will have a jailbroken iPhone.
You can use this jailbreak for the iPhone 4/3Gs/3G as long as you are running the right baseband version.
